I've never played rugby. Can I still come out for the
team?
Of course! Since Rugby is just now gaining popularity in the United States,
many members of the team never played rugby before stepping on the ruck at UNR. And as a club sport we make no cuts.
I am a UNR student. How do I get involved with UNR Women's Rugby?
We are always looking for new players. Contact us through this website
at nevadawomensrugby@gmail.com or just show up to a practice (see Schedule page on website). All we ask for is enthusiasm
and a willingness to learn and have a lot of fun on and off the field.
Who can play?
Any UNR undergraduate or graduate student can practice. If you are an
undergraduate who has been enrolled at UNR for more than 5 years, we will have to figure out your eligibility for league
games. However many of us play year round even after our eligibility is up. For beginners or uneligble players, not only
do we have the main rugby team, we have what we call a "B side" team which includes players whose eligiblity is used up. We
play "B side" teams from all of the same Universities as the regular team, and anyone is welcome to play
in these games.
When do you practice?
See our Schedule page on this site for practice times.
When is the season?
Our main season is in the winter, when we have our league games (we are
part of the Div 1 Pacific Coast Region that includes California and Stanford). Playoffs are in early spring.
What do I need to play?
For practice each player needs a mouthguard, cleats (no toe cleats
allowed- get soccer or rugby-specific cleats), as well as athletic clothes that you don't mind getting dirty. For games
each player needs a mouthguard, rugby shorts, and cleats the team will issue a jersey. While being a good idea,
helmets are optional and once you play for a while you will figure out if you prefer to wear one or not.
What teams do you play?
We are members of the USA Rugby Division 1 Pacific Coast Region that
includes schools in California and UNR. We also play UC Davis, Stanford, Cal State Chico, and Cal State Humbolt.
What does it cost to play?
As a club sport, Women's Rugby recieves little, if any financial assistance
from the University. Each member of the team is responsible for all individual travel and equipment costs (besides game jerseys) as
well as yearly registration costs. We usually carpool and definitely take into account that we are all on budgets.
